ABSTRACT
Objective: to analyze the influence of breastfeeding on the development of dentomaxillary anomalies and malocclusions during childhood. Method: a hybrid systematic-narrative review was conducted based on a systematic search of scientific literature in international databases (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, Cochrane, Virtual Health Library, PubMed, Epistemonikos, BioMed Central) and grey literature from official organizations. The PICO strategy and predefined inclusion and exclusion filters were applied. Out of 659 identified sources, 35 were selected for final analysis, prioritizing systematic reviews and meta-analyses published within the last ten years. Results: The findings demonstrated that exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding acts as a protective factor against various malocclusions, such as anterior open bite, posterior crossbite, and Class II malocclusion. A duration of less than 12 months was associated with an increased risk of developing malocclusions, whereas exclusive breastfeeding for ≥ 6 months reduced the probability of occlusal disturbances. However, methodological heterogeneity among studies and discrepancies regarding the optimal duration of breastfeeding and its effects on occlusion were observed. Conclusions: exclusive and prolonged breastfeeding plays a fundamental role in preventing malocclusions and promoting harmonious craniofacial development. It is recommended to strengthen its promotion in Primary Health Care through counseling, intersectoral protocols, and the active inclusion of dentists within breastfeeding support teams.
